Anything about Ubuntu, Centos, openSuSe and Fedora
Back in old days before the new gdm implementation, we can easily hide specific user from the login list, but now after Ubuntu 9.10 and later, the default option is to list or hide them all from the login screen. I got this tweak to at least manually select which users to hide from the login screen.
1. Using a sudo user or root access, modify the file /etc/gdm/gdm.schemas, then find the line with the following configuration:
<schema> <key>greeter/Exclude</key> <signature>s</signature> <default>bin,root,daemon,adm,lp,sync,shutdown,halt,mail,noaccess,postgres,pvm,rpm,nfsnobody,pcap</default> </schema>
2. Insert the users you wish to hide from the login screen inside the <default>..</default> clause
